PROGRAMS

CRIBS FOR KIDS® OF DURHAM

Part of the Durham Connects model is to fill gaps in service within the Durham community. While developing Durham Connects, our nurses found that with the high cost of baby supplies, many mothers could not afford a new crib. After three years of successful crib deliveries as a National Cribs for Kids® affiliate, Durham Connects has transferred the program to our partner, Welcome Baby. Please visit thier website to learn more about how to donate to the program or to receive a crib.

This self-sustaining non-profit program purchases and distributes new porta-cribs for parents in need in the Durham community. Crib referrals come from nurse home-visitors and each family must receive Cribs for Kids safe sleep training before receiving a crib. Families take ownership in the program, by contributing a $10 co-pay to cover the shipping and handling of each crib. All cribs are purchased through private donations from the community.

In order to be eligible, parents must receive a referral from an authorized home-visting healthcare provider or social worker. Chidren must be between the ages of 0-6 months. Cribs are distributed on a first come, first serve basis and is contingent on continued program funding.

Francine's Story

Francine is a loving mother of two school aged boys. When she became pregnant with twins, she only had one crib and was worried about having the resources to purchase another one. Then one of the babies became ill and pressures became even more difficult. With no transportation or family support Francine was doing the best she could to raise her four children while her husband worked during the day. Cribs for Kids was able to provide Francine with a porta-crib, so that when her sick twin came home from the hospital she had a safe place to place him. Today, the family is doing well.

About Cribs for Kids - Since 1998, through the donation of thousands of cribs, Cribs for Kids® has been making an impact on the rates of babies dying of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) and accidental suffocation. Cribs for Kids® is a safe-sleep education program for low-income parents to help reduce the risk of injury and death of infants due to unsafe sleep environments. Cribs for Kids Programs throughout the country provide a Graco Pack N Play® Crib and educational materials regarding 'safe sleeping' and tips to protect babies. Cribs for Kids is a national crib program that was originated by SIDS of Pennsylvania.
